Project Generation Gap Body Work Hits the Home Stretch!

Our fastback project will see paint this week, just in time for Silver Springs Mustang Roundup, read our blog for the details.

If there's ever been a top 10 list for flogging for a deadline, the work on our '68 fastback has to rank right up there somewhere. Over the last three weeks we've taken our fastback from rough body work to smooth as glass surface ready for painting, and we wouldn't have been anywhere close without the help and expertise of the crew at Classic Creations of Central Florida (www.classiccreationsfl.com). They've been working long hours, including holiday weekends on the fastback and even with my limited body work experience I got a long board sander shoved in my hands and recruited to help too. After three solid days of sanding I have much more respect for the paint and body field, let me tell ya!

Project Generation Gap Blown Apart For Body Work

We started off with a fresh coat of K38 high build primer (as you can see in our lead photo above) and slowly started block sanding every square inch of the car with 80 grit paper. We now have the car blown apart to work on door edges, the top of the rockers, door jambs, and more. While I'm at the office today, I'll be back at Classic Creations the rest of the week helping out. Our plan is to have color on it by Wednesday and then try to cut and buff the surface on Thursday so we can get it to the show by Friday for display. If you're coming to Silver Springs you'll be amongst the first to see it in color!

Here are a few more "spy photos" of some of the mods we're incorporating:

Project Generation Gap Modified Cowl

Since we no longer need an open cowl for fresh air (we'll be using a recirculating A/C system from Old Air Products in the build) we closed off the cowl and hand fabricated these air extractors to match the ones on the upper quarter panels. No more worrying about pine needles or leaves causing rust inside the cowl!

Project Generation Gap Rear Valance

Out back we've bonded on this fiberglass lower valance from Mustangs Plus (www.mustangsplus.com). It uses molded in backup light housings for a nice chrome-free look, and we plan on trimming back the bottom lip where the exhaust will come out and adding some sort of black screen to the area, sort of like the SVT Mustang, Focus, and Contour had. Also notice our 12-inch LED third brake light in the face of the trunk lid too.

Stay tuned for more updates!
