The Super Mustang Sells at Gooding & Company Monterey Auction
This one of a kind Mustang dragster, built by Ford is a great piece of Ford, Mustang, and racing history. Read the blog for more.
Astute freelancer Drew Phillips fired us off an excited email about seeing the Super Mustang slingshot dragster at an auction on the west coast last weekend. Truth be told, we've seen photos of the interesting machine but never knew a whole lot about it.
The Super Mustang was built in late 1966 and famed drag racer Connie Kalitta was hired to perform the shakedown runs, sans bodywork in early 1967. It's powered by a fuel injected 427 SOHC "Cammer".
Later, at the 1967 Pomona Winternationals it was campaigned by Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, where it ran 8.60 at 180 mph, incredible time and speed for the day. The Winternats was the only competitive outing for the Super Mustang, but we're sure Ford got a lot of great publicity out of the car, even using it in some Mustang ads. Our sister book, Car Craft, put it on the cover in 1967 even.
The car was sold in 1968 to Mickey Thompson, were it stayed in his huge collection until his death in 1988. The car was fully restored by its previous owner in 2003 and just sold at last week's auction for $154,000.
