Project Generation Gap Update

Our Automatic Overdrive Transmission Arrives

When you tell someone you have a five-speed in your Mustang they normally think of the standard manual transmission options. Not anymore though. Since 2005 Ford has been putting the 5R55S five-speed automatic overdrive trans in the Mustang (it's been used extensively in SUVs and trucks for the last eight years or so).

Since we're using a S197 Mustang 4.6L Three-Valve modular engine we figured why not use the same model's transmission.

This beauty is from the trans experts at Performance Automatic in Maryland and is their "Super Street" transmission. It can be used behind a standard mod motor application or even behind a small-block with their own bellhousing adapter and stand alone electronics.

Since our mod motor is using the Ford Racing Control Pack wiring kit we're going to be using the stand alone electronics kit from Performance Automatic as well. Designed by Powertrain Control Solutions, the harness and controller allows custom shift control programming and more. You'll be seeing more of this trans in future issues as we mock up the driveline and do our wiring. Stay tuned.
