Mothers® Big Rig Background
The Mothers® big rig is about more than just getting from point A to point B. It's got to look good in the process. For exterior styling touches, the guys at Mothers® turned to their friend Chip Foose of Foose Design to render the graphic layout. Mitch Kelly of Kelly and Sons Crazy Paints in Bellflower, California have brought Foose's unique vision to life.
Like the products it was made to represent, the Mothers® big rig is cut from only the finest stock. Led by a Peterbilt Model 387 linked to a 53-foot Featherlite trailer, this heavy hauler is powered by a Cummins ISX diesel engine that generates 525 horsepower at 1,700 rpm and 1650 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,200 rpm. Delivering this awesome power to the wheels is a Fuller 10-speed Ultrashift automatic transmission.
Inside the polished stainless-steel walls of the Featherlite trailer, the Mothers® moving command vehicle plays host to a complete media center and lounge where passengers can enjoy satellite TV and a comprehensive Sony audio/video system with Kicker speakers. When it comes to cargo, an 18-foot movable lift and rear liftgate allow storage of up to four Mothers® show vehicles.
Mothers® Motorsports Rig Background
A sister ship to the Mothers® big rig made its debut in 2007. Configured primarily for race support, this second rig spends most of the season transporting the Mothers®-sponsored Robert Davis Racing (RDR) team's RX-8s for competition along the west coast where they where they were a dominant force in SCCA Club Racing. While the team still supports SCCA, starting in 2008, RDR campaigned the highly competitive rotary-powered Mazda RX-8s in NASA, fielding five cars in the Performance Touring (PT) class, with the classes differentiated by the amount of allowed modifications from a stock vehicle. For 2009, the team welcomes Lee "LeeRoy" Papageorge to the mix, driving in Performance Touring C (PTC) along with Dennis Holloway of Mothers®. Robert Davis and Scott Shelton are competing in PTD, while Jim Holloway of Mothers® is competing in PTB, the fastest class of the team. Other team members include Jeremy Barnes, Ken Saward, Truman Pollard and Jeff Jeppesen, all running in the Spec Miata class. RDR's goal for 2009 is to capture three NASA PT titles at Miller Motorsports Park in September.
