Big Changes Coming to Our In-House '68 Mustang Project

Read the blog for all the details on our current build plans, including a switch to Ford's modular engine platform...

That's right, you're reading it here first. Our '68 coupe project that is just getting under way is taking off in a different direction, one that we think will be very interesting to both our classic and late-model readers. Even though we've built a simple small-block for our project already we were all ears when the good folks at Ford Racing Performance Parts let us in on their little secret a few months back--a complete retrofit harness and installation kit for the Ford modular engine family, specifically the 4.6 Three-Valve, 5.4 Four-Valve GT500, and the Romeo 605 crate engine. With promises of one of the first retrofit kits off the assembly line we set out to find ourselves a lightly used 4.6 Three-Valve and found one from a '06 Mustang GT with just 11K miles on it. Soon we'll be detailing the engine and making it presentable, but we'll leave it stock for now with the thoughts of a few power upgrades down the road (FRPP cams perhaps).

Ford Racing Performance Parts 4.6 Three-Valve Wiring Kit

The retrofit kit includes an ECM, chassis side harness (you use the engine harness that comes with your engine), drive-by-wire gas pedal, power distribution box, mass-air meter, FRPP cold air kit, and instructions. The photo here shows most of the kit. The kit is part number M-6017-463V.

Don't worry though if you can't find your own engine, as FRPP is now offering a production 4.6 Three-Valve with upgraded cams (350HP) under part number M-6007-A463NA. Of course FRPP can also offer you the stout GT500 5.4 crate engine, or the absolutely insane 605hp version of it under part number M-6007-SGT, which uses installation kit M-6017-54SC. All of these hot new items are actually on sale right now in FRPP's "Modular Madness" sale through December 31st. Visit www.fordracingparts.com and click on the Modular Madness graphic for full details.

In other project news be on the lookout for future articles as we look at converting our coupe to a fastback, modifying the engine compartment and front suspension for the wide modular engine, improving safety with modern seats, and more, all in upcoming issues of Modified Mustangs & Fords.
