Danny Johnson paints cars-but not in a booth. He's more of the sit-behind-the-easel (or monitor) type. He's been at it for years, but only recently was he convinced to share his work with the public. A graphic designer since 1988, Danny has lived and worked in many different locales, but he now makes Central Texas his home. Regardless of where he has lived, he's always been "the guy in the Mustang." His ride of the past 12 years is a '66 fastback that he only stopped using as his daily driver last year. It seems the chore of buckling two small children into that nonexistent back seat was doing his back in.

A car guy at heart, Danny is first and foremost an artist. His portfolio boasts close to 20 years of graphic designs, but his interest has always been in rendering classic cars. There are plenty of automotive artists out there-many of them quite good. But Danny's approach is a bit different, as he likes to employ a sense of humor wherever he can.

These days, Danny's most-used medium is the computer. He draws upon the vast collection of stock photos he's accumulated from all that design work, as well as his own collection of personal automotive photographs. He assembles pieces digitally until the scene is set. He even enjoys using faces from old family photos whenever possible to add a little something personal to each piece. The compositions are made of traditional illustration and photographs, and digital manipulation of it all. The result is a somewhat watercolory kind of oil pastel; sort of pen-and-ink thing-each with a tongue-in-cheek chuckle

No, they aren't all Mustangs; but they are mostly musclecars. Each piece measures 20" x 16" and is a giclee print on acid-free watercolor paper. Mustang Project is the exclusive distributor. Visit www.mustangproject.com to see the entire line of Danny's work.
